    LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Make sure you mark June 5th and 6th in your calendar. The AGM will be held at the Sheraton this year. We have had a lot of positive feedback from past years so we decided to return. The Membership Renewal, Golf Tournament Application and Nomination Forms are included with this UPTICK. Please return them to us as soon as possible. If you have anyone that you would like to nominate for election to the Board, please get their names to us by May 15. You feedback is vital in helping us build a strong Board.

The Board has been working to put together an educational seminar on Monday, May 5th at the TSX Conference Centre. There will be presentations from Market Regulation Services, The OSC and The TSX. It promises to be an excellent forum for traders.

In an attempt to get a better understanding of our industry demographics, STA has been working with all of the affiliates to put together a member survey. Please take two minutes to fill it out -- that's all it will take. STA is going to give the affiliate with the highest percentage participation two free passes to the conference in Arizona this fall. If we win, we will raffle them off amongst IETA members who are planning to attend. Note: We have been assured the results will only be used for STA purposes. Let's make James Duncan proud.

I look forward to seeing all of you on May 5th and at the AGM. As always, any feedback or comments you have would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards,

Michelle DaCosta, President, IETA (of Toronto)

SECOND ANNUAL WINTER VENDOR FAIR - FEBRUARY 13, 2003

After a very successful initial campaign, the IETA and CSTA hosted the Second Annual Vendor Fair on February 13th, 2003 at the Design Exchange. The event started at 12:00 noon and members from the traders associations were asked to participate along with IT professionals from their firms. Once again, the event was an absolute success, so expect this to be back for the third annual in February 2004.

We saw a steady stream of professionals from technology, operations, trading and business heads all express an interest in the content of the exhibiters. If there was one theme to be gleaned from this Vendor Fair, it's safe to say that many firms were looking at what the Trade Order Management System providers had to offer: Charles River, MacGregor, Line Data, Sixteen vendors, service providers and exchanges participated and were quite surprised with the attendance, which we believe to be again over 400 throughout the day.

The thoughts of the participants were best summed up by a salesman from Charles River Development who said after coming back from January's Trader Forum in New York, "to get as many leads at an event like this is a very pleasant surprise - we will be back next year".

As always, we would greatly appreciate member feedback in order to continue to make this a better event going forward. This year's participants included: Archipelago, Belzberg, Bloomberg (sponsor), Charles River, E*Trade, GL Trade, Instinet, IPC, ITG Canada, KTG Technologies, Line Data, MacGregor, NASDAQ, ORC Software, Reuters, and TSX.

We would like to thank all those individuals who took time out to help make this year's Vendor Fair a tremendous event especially (there are too many names to mention). For further details, please contact Nicholas Thadaney at 416-874-0737 or James Duncan at 416-869-3844

IETA CHARITY BOWLING TOURNAMENT FEBRUARY 6TH, 2003 AT BATHURST BOWLERAMA

Once again, the Charity Bowling Tournament was a smashing success. The event was sold out two days after its announcement. Total funds raised was a whopping $8,000 which will be donated to the Bay Street Children’s Charity Foundation for distribution to various charities. On behalf of the IETA Board I would like to graciously thank all the participants who made this event an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Although the focus of the tournament is about “giving” that didn’t diminish the competitive attitude amongst the bowlers. I was told that one person even brought with him four, yes I repeat, 4 bowling balls for his team to use. This must be the key to success because his team, BMO Nesbitt Burns, took first place this year with an average team score of 627. Congratulations! Way to go guys!!! However, the “Kingpin” of the night was Sean McCowan of the TD Newcrest team with a score of 175. WOW, that’s “big time”!!!

    The results were as follows:
1st Place – BMO NB (John Kerrigan, Mike MacCormac, J.J. Macmenamin, John Nelson, Paul Rodwell), 627 points
2nd Place – TD Newcrest (Marcia Akai, Josie Bonfanti, Chris Finora, Sean McCowan, George Stratis), 599 points
3rd Place – Goomba’s (Angelo Gasparotto, Tim Hughes, Judy Nishimura, Roberta Pigat, Chris Rigby), 575 points
3rd Place – First Associates (Joe Dayian, Clark Toews, Jasmine Totaraitis, Mike Young, Rob Sheldrick), 575 points

Honourable mention: Hmmm can you believe the bar underestimated the quantity of “beverages” necessary to quench the thirst of our group. I didn’t realize bowling was a very strenuous sport. I heard the bar ran out of vodka and that they had to make a trip to the beer store to replenish their stock. Shocking!!! Nice work…I’m just saying.

    IN MEMORIAM - BILL McRAE

No words can do justice to the kind of man Bill was and how deeply he touched and affected my life.

When I first heard the name Bill McRae I was in awe. Then when I was given the opportunity to work with him, I was a little intimidated; after all anyone who phoned would get the loud and resounding “B I L L” on the other end of the line. At first he came across as a big bear but all too quickly we learned he was a big Teddy Bear.

Bill was a great mentor and valued friend to me and many others. He wasn’t afraid to share all that he knew. His philosophy was ‘the smarter we were the better we would make him look’. He instilled high values and ethical standards in our profession. His dedication to his work was unquestionable but his priority was his family and his love and devotion to them exemplified his warm character.

One thing I always remember Bill saying was “don’t wish time away” and I was reminded of this when I saw a sign a couple days after his passing that read “Don’t count the days, Let the days count.”

Bill will be greatly missed and now it is our job to continue what he has taught us by remembering to make the days count.
