    LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

"To know that we know what we know, and that to know we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge". - Confucius

Greetings and salutations to all! Best wishes for a prosperous 2006! The IETA and CSTA continue to reflect the vibrancy of Canadian Capital markets. I am consistently amazed by the success of our events and by the support of our membership.

2006 promises to be a year of excitement and challenge. Rapid changes in technology and regulation continue to keep the trading industry in flux. I urge you to take advantage of educational opportunities, such as the upcoming CSTA/IETA Vendor Fair, that help you keep ahead of the "change" curve.

Thanks to everyone for making this year's IETA Christmas party a tremendous success. The room at the Hyatt seems to get smaller each year! Please note, you must have your membership paid in full to attend any IETA function. Membership renewal information will be sent out soon. To avoid getting caught in the registration lineup at the AGM please ensure that you are on the "paid in full" list. If you are unsure, please email Janice Cooper.

The IETA Board is working hard to deliver another quality program for 2006. I hope to see everyone at the upcoming events contained in this latest issue of Uptick.

As always, we are anxious and appreciative of our members' feedback. Please feel free to forward your opinion (good or bad), to myself or any other Board member.

    Best regards
James Bolen, President, IETA (of Toronto)

IETA ANNUAL FALL BASH - THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2005

The IETA Fall Bash on September 29th was well attended this year, despite hearing many people describe it as being "So far away!!". It was held for the first time at The Academy of Spherical Arts where a few good scotches were had and some heated games of pool were played. We heard good reviews on the service and the food and unfortunately the only drawback was that we never thought to check the venue to ensure it had more than one washroom for each sex - so apologies to all those that had to wait to use the washroom, we'll work on that for the venue for the spring. If anyone has any suggestions for the spring fling venue please feel free to pass them along.

IETA ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY - THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2005

The 2005 IETA Christmas party was held at the Park Hyatt Hotel. Over 400 members attended this year to celebrate the holidays and close out a great year in the markets. The Park Hyatt outdid themselves this year with some of the best received food. I’d like to give an honorable mention to the chef who was frying the cheese in miniature bomb fire like flare-ups. At first I thought someone offended him, causing an attempt to flush us out early with smoke. Now, I’m thinking he was trying to get everyone into the winter Olympic spirit, by showing us his impression of the Olympic torch.

The 50 /50 draw raised $2,700 for The Philip Aziz Center for Home Hospice Care. A special thanks to the returning Christmas elves for selling the tickets.

CSTA/IETA EDUCATIONAL EVENT WITH NYSE - THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2006

On January 26th the CSTA & IETA welcomed The New York Stock Exchange for an educational evening at the Royal York Hotel. The NYSE presented their new market model which they feel will integrate the best aspects of both the auction market and automated trading. Peter Jenkins and Bill Flanagan represented the NYSE, Doreen Mogavero from Mogavero Lee & Co., an independent Floor Broker, and Tom Shafer from VDM NYSE Specialists offered a simulation of some of the sophisticated technology of the NYSE Hybrid Market.

About 150 members and regulators viewed the new trading functionality. Demonstrated were some of the many new faster and more flexible electronic trading elements that will offer NYSE customers a broader choice of trade-execution preferences and opportunity for price improvement.

Pending SEC approval, the full rollout is expected to begin phase in over a period of time in the second quarter of 2006.

IETA ANNUAL CHARITY BOWLING TOURNAMENT - THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2006

    BOWLING FOR $$

On February 2nd, the IETA held its annual Charity Bowling Tournament. We have held this event for many years now and it never fails to sell out quickly when we try to round up teams. We do apologize to those who signed up too late to field a team. Within half an hour of our email we were filled up!! We successfully bowled our way to $8000 in donations for the Bay Street Children’s Foundation. Well done!

It really was a fun night with very competitive bowlers and a close race but we have managed to emerge from the event with some new winners this year. The results are as follows:

1st Place – (Mark Mulroney, Roberta Pigat, Ray Ritchie, Judy Nishimura, John Mulder) with a score of 777 points
2nd Place - (Donna Lingeman, Craig Brenner, Angelo Gasparotto, Mark Eaton, Quentin Broad, Ken Sylvestre) with a score of 771 points
3rd Place - (Craig McConnell, Katy Patient, Vidis Vaiciunas, Lucas Atkinson, Bob Little, Steve Barnes) with a score of 767 points
Overall best personal score goes to Judy Nishimura with 201 points.

On behalf of the IETA board, I would like to thank all the participants who made this event a huge success.

CSTA/IETA ANNUAL WINTER VENDOR FAIR - THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2006

On February 23rd, the 2006 CSTA/IETA Winter Vendor Fair will be held at the Design Exchange after an extremely successful event last year. This year's event promises to be even better based on an increased focus within the Canadian marketplace on order management systems, electronic/algorithmic trading, transaction cost analysis and electronic order audit capabilities. We have a record 18 vendors attending this year and we would have accomodated even more vendors had we the space!

You are invited to bring along interested information technology folks within your firm to check out the "latest and greatest" trading technology products. The TSX is holding their algorithmic trading conference on February 22nd (the day before) so we are expecting many attendees to extend their stay for the Vendor Fair. Hours of operation on February 23rd are from 12:00 - 8:00 pm with the cocktails being served from 5:00 - 8:00 pm so don't miss it!!!!
